The Friend Date

Hey lovelies!

So we’ve all been there—the awful dating phase. If you’re that one person who has never had a bad dating experience—I loathe you. Okay, not really, I’m just a little salty. But-for those of you who have had several horrible dating stories—I feel you. I have also had my fair share of awful dates. Especially first dates. We can suffer through these memories together.

My very first date was with a semi-friend in high school. We weren’t quite friends, but we were far from acquaintances. We’ll call this guy Jake. Jake texted me one day and asked if I wanted to catch a movie sometime. I love movies, so of course I said yes. We both love action/comedy movies, but for some reason he wanted to go see something scary. We saw The Purge when it first came out. (I feel so old).

When I first met him at the movie theater entrance, he just smiled and stared at me. Didn’t say a word. I kept trying to get words out of him, but they weren’t forming very well. After our awkward greeting, we walked up to get tickets. I went to pay for my ticket, and he smacked my card out of my hand. Like, excuse me? Did you really just do that? He insisted that he pay. We walked up to the concessions, I tried to pay for my stuff again, and he SMACKED MY CARD OUT OF MY HAND AGAIN. I should have smacked him.

During the movie, I was sitting cross legged in my chair, leaning toward the front of my seat and I thought I saw something in the corner of my eye. He was trying to make the classic move (the old yawn and stretch). But I was leaning so far to my right that was basically on a date with the guy next to me. I watched Jake struggle for a few minutes until he finally quit. I think he got the hint! After the movie was over, he didn’t say a word to me, gave me the most awkward hug (like the awkward body-hug-shake-thing from Just Friends). I didn’t get a goodbye, see ya later, catch ya at school—nothing.

That was probably the most awkward date, or whatever it was, that I’ve ever been on.
